Response #5 Page 184-245 5/23-5/31 Oni Mayer

Chris found Win and talked him into coming back but Win didn't.  Win gave Chris a lot of money and sent him off back to his college.  Chris went back to college feeling better than ever and lived a good life knowing that Win was doing good and that he was sorry for ditching him by the Coyote and with a flat tire.

Response #5 Page 184-245 5/23-5/31 Oni Mayer

"I like How Win and Chris both matured."
"When will Win return to West Virginia or go to college?"
"I think it's funny that the FBI agent in the dark jacket followed Chris all the way to the restaurant with Win's girlfriend.
"I don't like how FBI agents are still investigating Chris."

Response #5: pg. 185-245 (end of book)

Some interesting quotes I read in this final part of the book were: Win certainly, to quote my mother, had made an impression on this girl. (pg. 185), "Eagle! Get up!" (pg. 190), "Think this is what they call basking." (pg. 192), Finishing was a sure thing now. (pg. 194), "The Mountainus goatus is a unique species, known for its keen appetite for automotive fluids. Some attribute its longevity to the pickling properties of these agents. And isn't this one a beaut?" (pg. 195), I felt like, well like distance. (pg. 197), Sometimes it pays to be a skinny guy. (pg. 200), Everybody was protecting Win. (pg. 203), "I guess there's that Space Needle thing." (pg. 206), "This is way cooler than the auto goat." (pg. 207), "Take that you rabid little intestine eating bastard!" (pg. 209), "You'll catch up," he said, adding, "Someday." (pg. 210), The anger crept into my voice unbidden. (pg. 214), "The talk's enough when you hear it for as long as I have. I had to get someplace where his wasn't the only voice I heard inside my head. Someplace I could figure out who I was." (pg. 218), "Now you and I both know that when you change as much as we have, when you've proved that you're more than everybody thought you were, you can't go back to the place you started. You've outgrown it all. The place, everybody's expectation...yourself." (pg. 220), "I wanted you to know I didn't use you." (pg. 221), I caught myself thinking that Win would have liked this place. (pg. 226), "Apple or cherry?" "Both," I said. "Good man." (pg. 230), I made friends with a little kid who's mom was scarier than Win's dad. (pg. 237), "Hell, maybe I'm just bored." (pg. 240), "You smell like crap, Collins." (pg. 241), I didn't need those pictures in my hands or on my wall to know that. And I didn't need Win, either. But it was good knowing they'd be there when I wanted a reminder. Both of them. (pg. 245).
Some thoughts I had while reading this section of the book were: Why did Win leave at such an awful time?, I'm really glad that Win is happy and is living with Morgan and Effie.
My thought on the end of the book was not a positive one. I am not at all happy of how the book turned out. To be honest, I was hoping Ward would find Win dead, and that Chris would have to set out on another bike trip across America to find out what happened to Win, why he died, and what he was doing with so much money. I was very disappointed that a book with so much lead up simply ended with a flash drive and a happily ever after.

Response #4 Page 123-184 Oni Mayer

Chris gets two postcards from Win and decides to take a road trip to where the postcards came from.  Chris figures out that one of Win's dad's FBI agents was following Chris on his trip to find Win.  Chris oversleeps on the road trip and gets off at a rest stop that he and Win encountered on their bike trip.  At the rest stop one of Chris' and Win's friend says Win comes in every Saturday and gave him a bus he could take to where Chris thought Win is.

"Why is Win staying where ever he is instead of going to college?"
"What happened to Chris at the farm?"
"Why was an FBI agent following Chris?"
I like how Chris runs into people who he met on his bike trip.

Response #4: Pgs. 123-184

Some interesting quotes I reading this section were: Lindt sounded a little embarrassed at the condition, and maybe the comfort, of his prisoners. (pg. 124), "Turn down the damn TV, Toto!" (pg. 125), "Leave my mom alone. Torment your own." (pg. 127), "Pop-Tarts on the road?" "Breakfast of champions." (pg. 129), The post card felt like it might burst into flame at any moment. (pg. 133), "I can't even grow a beard." (pg. 137), "Mmm...extra crunchy." (pg. 139), "Virden makes it's own rules." (pg. 140), "Water, right. He's saying something about a lot of water." (pg. 142), I'm pretty sure Coggans could get the reference librarian to try to take me out. (pg. 144), "I'm Avantika," she said. "And I'm also late for soccer." (pg. 146), My dad loved me. He loved his job. But he also loved Win. (pg. 150), "This wind is evil." (pg. 152), And then Win started screaming. (pg. 153), "Nice day, huh?" (pg. 155), I could have pointed out that removing the flag might be just crazy enough to work, but that would have been helpful. (pg. 156), Maybe having someone to listen to him bitch about a tailwind all night would have made his whole day worthwhile. (pg. 156), ...shoved his toolbox shrieking along the beat-up bottom. (pg. 159), "If a man don't know if he's had fresh peas, he ain't had fresh peas." (pg. 160), Pissed that I was pretty sure he knew exactly what he was doing... (pg. 162), ...something told me there'd be more gravy and possibly something else fried. (pg. 169), Take down, reversal, grapple, near pin, escape, repeat. (pg. 174), We were both smitten. (pg. 181), "Find him. That's what I came to do." (pg. 187).
Some thoughts I had reading this section were: It seems like Win is scouting out possible places to live or hide., Why does Ward lie so much, and can't he tell that Chris knows he's lying?

"Where is Win, now that we know he is alive?"
"I am really glad that Win is alive."
"Why did Win not tell Chris about his stash of money?"
"Why did Mr. Coggans visit Chris at his college?"
"Did Win bring the money for his disappearance and plan the disappearance?"

Chris is going to Georgia Tech college right now, is starting classes, and found a pretty girl.  Chris got a letter from Win in code so no one else could decipher it.  Mr. Coggans (Win's dad) came to Chris' college to talk to him about Win's disappearance and Chris tells him everything he knows except the letter and Win's stash.  Coggans thinks he's still hiding something and starts to get angry.  On the trip, Chris looked through Win's bag and found a huge wad of money a lot of money.  He decides not to ask Win about the money.

Respone #3: Pgs. 61-123

Some interesting quotes I found in this section of Shift are: I only heard one thing- Chris, not Chrisandwin. (pg. 63), "Tricksey Hobbitses stole my precious!" (pg. 66), "Seriously, my little cousin in New Jersey has a light just like that. Only hers has this little thing you can put on the front that makes the light change from purple to pink to yellow...." Win leaned a little closer. "Looks like yours broke off." (pg. 69), "Tell her the yard isn't even worth taking a dump in!" (pg. 70), He let the lure of pies sink in. Shrewd. (pg. 75), ...drunk with saturated fat and exhaustion. (pg. 77), "Win's behavior was clinically weird, Agent Ward." (pg. 80), "But you're the only one who just biked cross-country with a guy carrying nineteen thousand dollars in cash when he disappeared." (pg. 83), "...but at least she'll have to give up on the kidnapped and dead-in-a-ditch theories." (pg. 87), And the truth was, I didn't because I was afraid of what I already knew. (pg. 92), Who the hell was Tricksey? (pg. 100), Reality had a disappointing habit of not measuring up to my memories. (pg. 101), Win ranted on. "Land of Ten Thousand Lakes, right? Well, how'd all the lakes get here if these hills are in the way?" (pg. 103), "I think my shrink has that painting." (pg. 106), Win's dad had him spooked. (pg. 111), What it might feel like to always worry about saying the wrong thing at the wrong moment. (pg. 112), The postcard wasn't begging to be handed over anymore. (pg. 115), Apparently, Win had been a closet fan of the TV show based on the book. (pg. 118), "...You will never again see the inside of a jail cell, Eagle." (pg. 112).
Some thoughts I had from reading this section of Shift were: Why did Win have so much unused money?, I think the way Win teases the people on the trip is funny and charming, Why does everyone but Win fear Coggans?

Oni post #2 Summary

Win and Chris live in West Virginia and have been friends since 3rd grade and best friends since 8th grade.  They're both seniors at high school and decided to take a bike trip across the country at the end of the year.  When Chris and Win get to Seattle, Win disappears and Chris can't find him.
When Chris goes back to Virginia, he goes to Georgia Tech College.  He is in shock that his best friend Win just disappeared.  Two days before classes started for Chris, an FBI agent came to investigate about Win's disappearance.  Chris learns that Win's father had hired the FBI agent to investigate Wins disappearance, and that Win's father thinks Chris had something to do with Wins disappearance like Chris killed Win maybe!?

legrand post #2 characters

Grayson Samples (enter story, exit story)

Male, wear pin-striped suit, a senator, fidgety, afraid.

This character is flat due to the short amount of time he was in the story; he did not even speak any written words in the story.

Winston Coggans III (enter)

Male, joker, liar, goofy, biker, friend of Christopher, a little bit of a jackass, pushy, and stressed.

This character is round because in some parts of the story he is carefree fun and goofy and in other parts he is sad and serious. I think this is due to the appearances of his parents and motives yet to be seen.

Alicia Bivins (enter story, exit story)

Female, attractive, weak, a talker, slender and fragile mentally and physically.

This character is flat due to her being in the story for such a short time there wasn’t room for development.

Christopher (enter story)

Male, approximately six foot, itchy early warning system, friendly, helpful, biker, hard worker, Winston’s friend, and reliable.

This character is round because he changes as he older through the chapters and develops his feelings. He is confused about his feelings about Winston.

Male, Christopher’s father, regretful, knows his son, sad, sometimes scared.

This character is flat because he is a classic father figure and doesn’t change.

This character is flat because he just has not personality.

Female, a graduating senior.

This character is flat because she doesn’t do or say anything.

Dave Anders (enters story, exits story)

Male, mean, loves his Dodge pick-up. He is large, tall, strong, judgmental, obstinate, and physical.

This character is flat because he has been in story for a short time so there was no time for character development.

Nancy (enter story)

Female, Christopher’s Mom, worrisome, protective,

This is a flat character because she seems to be a stereotypical mom.

Lydia Coggans (enter story, exit story)

Female, Winston’s mom, travels, much money to waste

This is a flat character because she is a rich snobby woman with too much time on her hands.

Winston II (enter story)

This character is flat because he is a beige businessman who doesn’t spend much quality time with his son.

Sophie post #2: pgs. 1-61

Some interesting quotes, figurative language, and words that I found in this week's reading are: The nose of my seat bit into my shoulder as the toe clip scraped the back of my thigh. (pg. 1), "I hear those things are a lot easier if you ride them instead of letting them ride you." (pg. 2), Short for  "bane of my existence and one-time best friend.'' pg. 4, The fans droned heavily behind me. (pg. 7), ...she just camoflauged commands inside queries. (pg. 9), Mom shot him a Don't encourage the boy look. (pg. 11), "I don't remember, Mom. One of the Stan countries maybe?" (pg. 13), ...as if I was someone he wanted to fire rather then a kid. (pg. 16), "And this whole Seattle story? Not making you look too hot." (pg. 22), ...the tang of chemicals.... (pg. 28), ...staring at the two men like they were a traffic accident on the freeway. I couldn't look away. (pg. 28), "I am helping," he said. "I'm providing much-needed clarity into the messy domestic situations of your troubled household." (pg. 33), "We're going to whole distance, Dave," Win said cooly. (pg. 38), "Funny how we sort of turn into our fathers..." (pg. 45), "...with mom crying enough for two sets of parents." (pg. 52).
Some thoughts and questions I had while reading this section of the book are: Why is Chris so fed up with Win?, The way Chris talks about Win behind his back is similar to the way he talks to Win., and If Chris hates school why does he try so hard?

Oni post #1 You can't judge a Book by it's cover...

I think the author and publisher were trying to communicate that the bike riders world is shifting.
I think that the author and publisher set a dark, scary, sad, confusing tone on the front cover.
The artists who provided the images was Debra Sfetsios-Conover.
I predict from the front cover that there will be some bike riding, and there will be a lot of rain, and dark gray sky.

jody post #1 you can"t juge a book by its cover..

By reading the summery on the back and inside cover SHIFT sounds like a shady mystery. The author says, “imagine your world shifting” so his life has a drastic change so it would be a figurative title.

Sophie post #1 You can't judge a book by its cover...(L)

I have found, by looking at the blurbs about the book along with the Amazon suggestions, many things about Shift. One thing is that the author stresses the in the blurb that sometimes, the worst things you imagine, become reality. Many of the books associated with Shift have to do with escape, mysteries, suspense, adventure, and secrets. This book has yet to win an award, but gets high praise from critics. Some examples of this are: "keen details...wonderful texture to this exciting first novel (Booklist)", "An intriguing summer mystery. (Chicago Tribune)", and "great realistic mystery...a totally believable, totally engrossing story. (Chris Crutcher, auther of Deadline)". These reviews along with the explanation and simple, yet mysterious, cover lead me to belive this is a book book people think very highly of.
